What Exactly is Home Oxygen Therapy?
Oxygen is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas. The normal air we breathe everyday is made up of about 21 % oxygen. Supplemental oxygen can help a patient who cannot get enough oxygen while breathing normally. These patients include those with COPD, Chronic Bronchitis, Emphysema or Asthma.
Patients suffering from Congestive Heart Failure, Coronary Artery Disease or Sleep Apnea may also benefit from the use of supplemental oxygen. Home Oxygen can help promote independence and make it easier and safer to complete daily activities. Some patients use oxygen therapy while exercising (non-continuous), others only while sleeping (nocturnal), and some need oxygen all the time (continuous).
The visible aspects of breathing appear to be very simple; we just inhale and exhale. Inside, however, a much more complex process is taking place. When air is inhaled into our lungs, the oxygen in the air is transferred to our blood.
